The story: This painting is adapted from a photo taken at Black Mountain, NC, FCA Camp in 1967. The image of the young boy in a jersey looking admiringly at a Huddle of older boys captures the influence that coaches and athletes have on those around them. The “Number 18” painting represents decades of FCA spreading the Gospel to coaches and athletes. It hangs in thousands of coaches’ offices, athletes’ rooms, locker rooms, homes and businesses across America and serves as a powerful visual reminder of FCA’s influence. The boy: David Dean, the 3-year-old boy in the photo, came to camp every summer with his family, his father a high school football coach and his brother a Huddle Leader. Through the influence of the coaches and older athletes, he returned to Black Mountain as a teenager, made a first-time commitment to Christ and came back and became a Huddle Leader to influence a younger generation for Christ. He continued his influence while he played college football and began his coaching career, eventually becoming head coach at Valdosta State University where he has won two national championships. David continues to be involved in FCA, and the “Number 18” photo hangs in his office as a reminder that his players are watching him daily and that they will be influenced by the life he lives. #kansascityfca #fca #fca247 #influence

Wednesday Word - FCA's Daily Impact Play As a baseball player, there was no feeling like putting on eye black before a big game. When I smeared it on my face, I was focused on winning the game. I felt invincible--like I could do anything on the field. All nerves, problems and distractions went away. I was ready to be the superstar I knew I could be. As athletes, when we are focused and playing our best, everything comes to us naturally. We go with the flow and step up and shine. But what about when we step off the field? Are we really focused when it comes to the rest of our lives? As Christians, God has given us our own “eye black.” The Bible says that we are “anointed.” The original meaning of this word is “smeared.” When God would anoint someone in the Bible, leaders would smear oil all over their face. This oil represented the Holy Spirit. This represented the power of God to bring health and healing. The Bible reminds us that we have the same Holy Spirit in us that was in Jesus to enable us to pursue living our entire life focused on Him and His mission. #kansascityfca #fcagreater #fca #wednesdayword #dailyimpactplay

Wednesday Word - Team FCA's Daily Impact Play Hours before senior and team captain Tyler Makosy was about to take the mat for his final tournament at the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, he received a message from his coach that the tournament was canceled. Like so many others, Tyler was heartbroken. In the midst of this current crisis, “heartbroken” seems to be overused and falling short as an adjective to describe this feeling. Tyler had trained his whole life for this moment. Through many hours, he had finally sucked down his weight for his class; he had practiced his moves relentlessly over countless of hours; he had lifted weights beyond what he had ever thought possible. He gave it his all, but because of COVID-19, his season was over. The question his closest friends, family, and FCA Huddle teammates were asking was what they could do for Tyler. The question Tyler might have asked himself is what he could do. The answer: Pray, and pray about anything and everything. For some, praying might seem trivial during a time where things are getting worse not better. At this time, prayer might seem like offering a thirsty marathon runner half a cup of water at the end of a race. Because Tyler has a deep faith and personal relationship with God, prayer is like a huge glass of cold water to a runner. As Christians, God calls us to rely on Him and pray to Him when we face personal troubles. Like Tyler, and many coaches and athletes around the world, we have all experienced heartbreak, but we should practice praying for others at this time. It’s by God’s grace that we can experience Him and His comfort and peace for us. We all need to remember to turn our focus on God, and thank Him for all He has done and will do for us. #kansascityfca #fcagreater #fca #wednesdayword

Our JoCo staff covered all Shawnee Mission schools in prayer yesterday during a prayer walk they did at Shawnee Mission West. Their specific prayers were for new FCA staff needed and for a long list of coaches in the area. What a special way to spend time as a team lifting up Shawnee Mission together! Wednesday Word - FCA Daily Impact Play Thermostats and thermometers both deal in temperature but in very different ways. One measures the temperature and one defines it. It’s common to hear about thermometers these days. It seems that today we are obsessed (and rightfully so) with measuring everyone's body temperature. Yesterday, I even took my own temperature out of curiosity and fear. It read 98.8, which gave me a sense of relief that I didn’t have a fever. Yesterday, my area experienced weather changes, where it rained through the night, so I changed the temperature in my house from 68 to 70 degrees. My house warmed some, and it reduced the chill of the morning hours, which made it more comfortable inside for my family. Anyone can be a measure of temperature (whether in culture or for a person) by observing what others think and how they live. However, you could also be like a thermostat. Those people are people of integrity. They set the temperature for their culture by following God's Word. Paul encouraged his son in Timothy with these words. He said, “Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young but set the example..." It seems the world around us sets the temperature in which we live. As humans, we want to fit in, fly under the radar, and go with the ups and downs of life without being changed. We merely live by the temperature set for us by others in our culture. Today, I want to urge you to have a standard for integrity, meaning to live with purpose. We set the temperature by refusing to "conform to the pattern of the world, but are transformed by the renewing of our minds" (Romans 12:2). We set the tone of our world when we choose to fill our minds with God's Word. His Truth can help change our hearts, minds, and attitudes. Go to God's Word today!
